East Cornwall Branch Programme 2012

The Trevithick Society East Cornwall branch programme up to next winter.

There are still a few extra bits to add, Wheal Victoria visits, and the Heritage week event etc .so watch this blog for updates on those. The November and December events bubbling away on the end of phone calls and emails, so expect some news on them soon.  I have highlighted the new events....enjoy the year.

Tuesday 31st January 7.30pm Liskeard Public Hall- Forder Mill and Tramway-Industrial Activity in the Forder Valley in Saltash-An illustrated talk by  John Parsons , Chairman of Saltash Heritage
 

Tuesday  21st February  7.30pm Liskeard Public Hall-
'Quarry Memories: an oral history of granite and limestone quarries in Cornwall and Devon.'- an illustrated talk by Dr Kayleigh Milden Project Officer of
Peninsula Quarry Industry Social History Trust.



Sunday March 18: Visit to West Mary Ann Mine at Menheniot. A rare chance to go underground in a local mine. Meet at 1015 at the Liskeard Tavern car park-members only.

Saturday 14th of April: Visit to the Robey Trust at Tavistock. Meet 1100 at the Robey Trust, Parade Business Park, Pixon Lane Tavistock, PL19 9RQ. This will be a live steam day for Trevithick Society members, donations will be welcome by the trust towards fuel costs.

Saturday 28th April-Trevithick Day at Camborne.


Sunday 29th April-King Edward Mine Open day


11-13th May: AGM Weekend-St Just Area.

Includes field trips to Cot Valley, Bottallack, Kenidjack Valley, St Just Methodist Chapel and Rosevale Mine. The Annual dinner will be at the Commercial Hotel St. Just.

Tuesday 12th June 7:30PM  Liskeard Public Hall: Field Survey training by Andy Robinson of CHAHP.

A possible follow on survey exercise may be arranged at the meeting.


July 17th 7.30pm Liskeard Public Hall-Geology of the South West. How Cornwall’s  mineral wealth was formed. An illustrated  talk by the geologists. Calum Beeson.

Sunday 2nd September: Exploring the western mines of Devon Great Consols, a walk  by Rick Stewart. Meet 1100 at the Wheal Maria  Chimney. The walk will be about 3- 4 hours long and include Wheal Maria and Wheal Fanny with an optional extension to look at pre 19th Century tin workings at Blanchdown and Frementor.

Tuesday 16th October: The Oblivion of Trevithick- 7.30pm Liskeard Public Hall-Why are Trevithick’s achievements not fully recognised by history? An illustrated talk by Phil Hosken, author of “The Oblivion of Trevithick”

Just been informed the Trevithick Society's main website has some server issues and is being rebuilt...watch this space for news of its imminent re launch in a new form....

A date for next year's Diary- Visit to the Robey Trust

Here's another of next years events...we will be issuing an up to date programme once June and July are confirmed.   The society's AGM will be in May (Penwith area) and Trevithick  Day is 28th April.

This year's journal has an excellent article on Herodsfoot explosive works by Paul Day... so keep an eye on that letter box for its arrival!

Undeground Visit in March

March 18th 2012
A rare chance to gounderground at West Mary Ann Mine in Menheniot.

Meet at 1015 at the Liskeard Tavern car park.

This is a small privately owned mine that can be visited without specilised equipment. Just stout footware and old clothing. No ropework, crawling or wading needed.  Please leave a message here, or contact Cheryl Manley if you would like to come along.(members only)
